Flagstaff, Arizona

Soon after Arizona became American territory from Mexico in 1848, the U.S. Congress began to explore the Nation's new territories, Between 1857 and 1860, Lt. Edward Beale was sent to build a road across northern Arizona. He sent glowing reports to Congress, telling them how the Flagstaff area was rich in grasslands, water and timber. Once the Beale Road was established it became well traveled by emigrants going to California. On July 4, 1876, a group of travelers camped at a small spring with the peaks looming overhead. In honor of the nation's centennial, they stripped a pine tree of its branches and bark and raised an American flag. When they moved on, their “flag staff” became a landmark for all of those who followed.

Located in the high country mountains of northern Arizona, Flagstaff's four seasons are enviable by many. Winter adventures await in Arizona's officially designated Winter Wonderland with an average 108? of snow fall in downtown, while Spring offers breathtaking beauty of blooms in the world's largest contiguous emerald green ponderosa pine forest.

Summer temperatures average in the low 80s with sapphire blue skies and crisp mountain air, while the bounty continues into Fall with a panoramic canvas of quaking aspen and foliage offering hues of reds and purples.

Blue Ridge Reservoir

This narrow, winding body of water looks more like a canyon bound river than a lake. Be aware that this is a canyon lake, meaning there is very little shore access around the entire reservoir. The sides of the canyon that create this reservoir are steep and there are not any sandy shores like you might expect at a traditional lake with shoreline, which makes this reservoir a destination mainly for people kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.

Fishers can catch rainbow, brown or brook trout here, stocked by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Other types of recreation include sightseeing, wildlife watching, hiking, and mountain biking, but don't expect any wide open shores for sunbathing and swimming.

Blue Ridge Reservoir is an important water source for the town of Payson, Arizona. Forest thinning and prescribed burning in the area under the Cragin Watershed Protection Project is helping to protect this valuable water source and improve forest health in the area.

Payson, Arizona

Payson considers its founding year 1882, at which time the town was known as “Green Valley”. On March 3, 1884, a post office was established with the help of Illinois Representative Levi Joseph Payson. In honor of the representative's help, the town's name was changed to “Payson”.

In 1918 author Zane Grey made his first trip to the area surrounding Payson. He would come back with regularity through 1929, and would purchase two plots of land near Tonto Creek, including 120 acres from Sampson Elam Boles under Myrtle Point. Grey wrote numerous books about the area and also filmed some movies, such as To the Last Man, in the Payson area in the 1920S.

During the 1930S an effort began to try to get Payson a better road to connect it to the outside world. At that time the town was very isolated, with a trip from Phoenix to Payson taking eight to twelve hours. Throughout the 1950S work on a paved road from Phoenix to Payson progressed, and the road was completed in 1958. A couple decades later this highway, State Route 87 (also known as the “Beeline Highway”), was expanded to four lanes connecting Payson with Phoenix.
